Lights that are placed on the same wall as the door can be harsh and obtrusive due to glare (similar to looking directly at car headlights), compared to indirect lighting that is strategically placed to illuminate the doorway, floor, and door hardware. Lighting should be well thought-out, eliminate shadows and be glare-free.
