Universally-designed storage is about practical and useful placement that’s usable for everyone. The goal is to make sure the most commonly used things can be easily reached by everyone, so we suggest that at least 50% of shelving is between 18″ and 48″ from the floor, and pull-down shelving for any storage that’s above 60″ from the floor.
Use these ranges for any built-in storage, towel racks/hooks, and electrical outlets and switches too. Towel racks can even double as grab bars if they are specifically made for this purpose, and reinforced into the walls. Storage under vanities are great, but seated users will struggle with cabinetry or clutter getting in the way. Be creative!
