Lighting should minimize shadows and be designed to be as glare-free as possible. This is useful for everyone, but is especially important for people who rely on visual communication.
Natural lighting provides energy efficiency, increased sustainability, and comfort. The use of skylights, sun tunnels (or sun tubes), and/or clerestory windows will brighten up spaces during the day with no increase in power costs.
Ambient, or general lighting, refers to basic light sources that illuminate spaces. It can be added to dimmers to make spaces more functional. Choose ambient lighting wisely to create a welcoming and useful atmosphere.
Task lighting should be above each work space and added to compliment the ambient lighting. Overhead lighting is great for some things, but it can cast shadows on work spaces, especially when a person is between the light source and the area in which the person is working.
