Under-Counter Clearance

Not everyone wants to sit at a kitchen counter for certain tasks, but some prefer it to standing because of health-related issues, such as fatigue or the need for a wheelchair. When planning for seated access, vertical clearance should be a minimum of 27-29″ from the floor, and there should be plenty of room underneath for knees, ankles and toes.

Retractable doors known as flipper doors offer maximum flexibility for a wide range of users and are an attractive option for people who stand. Cabinetry can be designed to disguise under-counter clearance for seated access while appearing natural with storage that’s out-of-sight when flipper doors are closed.
