The ability to operate controls one-handed (or with limited hand function) is important. Toggle, rocker, push-pad, or push-button type controls are all easy to use. No control should require someone to perform twisting, pinching, or grabbing actions.
The use of contrasting colors on walls, switch plates, and/or control boxes will help everyone, especially individuals with visual limitations. Same goes for controls that are backlit or have built-in indicator lights.
This applies to the following (and more):
- Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
- Utilities (gas and water mains, circuit breakers)
- Appliances (microwaves, ovens, laundry, etc)
- Elevators
- Lighting
